Let’s Talk About Age

Thanks to the anonymous question sent to me during the previous post, I was given an inspiration for this post. This time, let’s talk about relationships involving people with big age differences. We’ll just talk about one situation - the one where the guy is older. Why that situation? Because I can relate to that. I’ve dated older guys before but I never had any experience dating really younger ones. And for me one or two years of age gap does not count, okay? We’ll talk big numbers here. At least five years difference.

Okay, I’ll stop rambling now about my personal experiences. I’ll get to the point. Here are the pros and cons of being a girl who’s dating an older guy.

Pros:
Some people say it’s ideal to date an older guy because studies show that girls mature faster than boys. So take a girl and a guy who’s two years older, then what you get is two people on the same maturity level. So that’s good, right? Another pro of dating someone older is that there is a certain level of financial security and stability with that person. Especially if he is someone who’s already working and you’re the type who thinks too much about your own future. It would be nice to date someone with a stable job. Expect to be spoiled by that kind of guy. He would take you out to fancy shmancy dinner dates, out-of-town trips, and shower you with presents. I don’t mean to sound like a gold-digger but who doesn’t want to be spoiled, right? Another plus is that you don’t have to deal with jealousy over some overrated computer game. He has other mature interests that doesn’t involve video games.

Cons:
There’s definitely going to be a lot of pressure in this kind of set-up. Well, a lot of pressure on your part. You’ll be pressure to act more maturely. You’ll be pressured to look the part as well. Also, it would be hard to relate to him. For example, you would tell him how your day went, and ramble on and on about some girl in your class. In the meantime, he would tell you about how bad his day was at work because of his temperamental boss. It’s hard when you think your problems were bad enough when they would seem petty compared to his. Of course, there is always that possibility that you might have a hard time hanging out with his friends because you have different interests from them. Lastly, and the most inevitable part is the public’s opinion. Let’s admit it, some people look down on couples in a May-December love affair. It’s hard for some people to accept these set-ups in the society and you can’t help being the object of their gossip. It’s mean but that’s the reality of it.

I’m not saying that it’s wrong to date someone who’s older. I’m just merely giving you the pros and cons of being in that situation. I, for one, would still prefer to date someone older. In the end, it’s not about the pros and cons that matter. What really matters is how you handle these. What really matters is that the good parts always overcome the bad parts. What really matters is that you love each other enough to stay together.

The Ultimate Date Outfit Guide

So you and this guy are going on a date. Oh, joy! But you don’t know what to wear and you really want to make a good impression! No need to fret. Here’s the ultimate guide on what to wear on that date.

  • The Date: Catching a Flick at the Cinema
What to Wear: Wear something cool and relaxed, basically anything that feels comfortable for you. Like a nice blouse, jeans, and your favorite pair of sandals. Or shorts, a decent top, and flats. No need to dress up but make sure that you do look nice.
    Inspirations:
  • The Date: Dinner at a Classy Restaurant
What to Wear: Be girly and feminine. I would recommend a skirt and blouse ensemble or a dress. It’s good to wear heels unless you’re not used to wearing them.
    Inspirations:
  • The Date: Drinks at a Bar
What to Wear: Wear your best gimik outfit sans the heavy make-up and plunging neckline. This is not a girls’ night out to meet guys; you’re actually on a date with one now. Achieve that party ready look without looking too provocative. The best tip? High hemlines and high necklines.
    Inspiration:
  • The Date: Afternoon at a Coffee Shop
What to Wear: This is another kind of date where you need to be relaxed. Summer dresses are good to wear for dates during the day because they scream “date material” and “casual” at the same time. Wear them with flats and you’ll do no wrong. Feminine tops, paired with shorts or jeans, are okay too. No high heels, please.
    Inspirations:

We’re done with the outfits. Then there are those golden rules that you have to follow and they apply for every date. These rules are simple. Don’t wear too much make-up. Don’t look too daring. Choose comfort over style. Always be confident. Everything is as simple as that. :)

Decode the Dude: His Footwear

Loafers or Leather Shoes. A guy who wears this type of footwear almost all the time are the clean-cut and serious type of guys. They are those type of guys that you can bring home to mommy. On a date, this type of guy would probably take you out for dinner at a classy restaurant or an afternoon at a coffee shop.

Sneakers. Guys who are sneakers are the boy-next-door types. They are easy going, cool, fun-to-be-with, and somewhat sporty. On a date, this guy would probably take you out an a movie-dinner date or at an arcade.

Sandals or Flip Flops. Guys who like to wear this are also easy-going, and are probably more easy-going than those sneakers-wearing guys. They are simple, laid-back, and they prefer comfort over anything else. When on a date with this guy, expect nature trips or trips to the beach.

Hi-Cut Sneakers. Hi-Cut sneakers type of guys are totally different from sneakers guys. Guys who often wear hi-cut sneakers are most likely the rocker or the artist types. Some would call them the bad-boy and mysterious types. On dates with this guy, he’d probably take you out to watch an indie rock band or take you for a ride on his motorcycle.

The Do’s and Don’t’s of a First Date

Okay, so you’re going on a date with this guy for the first time and you’re so excited about it. But at the same time, you’re feeling nervous because so many things could go wrong. Don’t fret, dearies. I’m here to help you out. I’m here to tell you what-to-do and what-not-to-do on a first date.

  • Do wear something nice and suitable for the date. If it’s a dinner date at a classy restaurant, dress to impress. If  it’s a casual movie date, wear something feminine but not formal, like a skirt and a cute tee.
  • Don’t ever compromise comfort for style. Don’t wear heels if you’re not used to wearing them. Don’t wear a micro-mini skirt if you’re going to spend the whole day pulling them down. Don’t wear tops with plunging necklines or your date might end up having a conversation with your cleavage instead of you.
  • Do wear make-up that’s appropriate for the situation. If you’re going out during the day, go for the light, natural look. If you’re going out at night, be more daring with your make-up.
  • Don’t go overboard with make-up. Remember: highlight only one feature of the face. If you want to wear red lipstick, do it but keep everything else minimal. If you’re going for smoky-eyes, wear almost-nude lipstick and natural blush.
  • Do apply proper table manners. Remember to act gracefully and with poise. Excuse yourself if you have to go to the restroom or take an important call. Be the well-mannered and classy young lady that you are. You’ll score more ganda points that way.
  • Don’t chew your food loudly. Don’t be rude to the restaurant’s service crew. Always say “please” and “thank you”. Don’t fix your hair while on the dining table. You don’t want hair in your food, right?
  • Do get to know your date. Ask him about his career, his family, and his interests. Share stories of your own too. Tell him about your career, your family, and your interests.
  • Don’t talk too much about yourself. Else, your date will get bored and he might think that you’re too conceited. Avoid TMI moments.
  • Do thank him for the date. If you both had fun and you are raring to go on a second date with him, a simple follow-up text saying you had a nice time will get the job done. He will most likely ask you out again.

Now, I will not tell you whether you should kiss on the first date or not. It’s up to you. Kissing on the first date will not make you a slut, not in this modern times. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. If you’re not comfortable to kiss him, a peck on the cheek will do to show him that you appreciated him for the date.

So there, ladies. XOXO
